Weekly Letter: Exploring Spirituality (Part 2)

Dear Reader,

In rereading Meditations on the Mat, Rohlf Gates says he prays to the ‘Universal Spirit’. Hmmm…interesting. So I tried that…it didn’t quite fit.

Still chewing.

More recently, I’ve been working on my slides for the Schools of Yoga presentation for 200hr, and I got stuck on a line about Jnana yoga and reached out to one of my mentors for guidance. The line is: Eventually Truth leads me to define/create “My God”. Then you come to truth and create “your God”.

Jnana yoga allows space for God to be fluid and to change over time. When we make God an actual person, then we are restricted by who they are and their fallibility.

Hmm…I like that better. I also like how Jnana approaches God in an exploratory way-all schools of yoga to, but the verticalist approach of Jnana narrows in on God and is giving me some new ways to think about it.

Then today, I read this dedication Swami Kripalu wrote and John Mundahl used for A Sunrise of Joy.

Swami Kripalu also felt lost, but found a teacher, not a god. He found someone who (for a short time) was able to give him hope and lead him to be a lifelong student. What a gift!
